Hogging the Carpool Lane vs. Adding 30 minutes to about 5000 peoples commute....
So the other day I was cruising home from work around 6:30 (Yes, I know, first mistake.) and I got to about 2 miles before the tunnel on the 10 and began about 30 minutes of "driving" between zero and five miles per hour. When I finally found out what the "problem" was that was holding up traffic, I thanked god that I didn't have a gun in the car.
I spent 30 minutes crawling in traffic because.....The EASTBOUND side of the 10 was closed due to an accident....bear in mind, I was in the WESTBOUND lanes, which were completely unaffected by the accident. In fact, the accident was right by the stack. For those of you that can't picture this section of road, let me explain it a bit.... The eastbound and westbound sections of the 10 are both suspended above the 17 and some industrial parks below, meaning it's basically a giant bridge at this point...but it's not one bridge, it's two, there's about 50 feet of space where you can see down below to the industrial areas below, then the other side of the 10, meaning the ONLY possible excuse for this delay was people stopping to look at the accident across the way.
Now, about 4 or 5 times a week I will see motorcycle cops writing tickets to people who are driving by themselves in the HOV (carpool) lane. For those that don't know, these tickets are $300 for the FIRST offense....
What I want to see is every time there is an accident on the freeway, there should be about 3 or 4 motorcycle cops sitting there to stop and ticket anyone who slows excessively or comes to a stop with no one in front of them, just so they can get a better view of the accident. Because that one person stopping adds about 20 minutes to the commute of the 5000 people behind them.
I think this ticket should start out at a warning for the first offense, and $500 for the second, third offense $1500, fourth = no more drivers license for at least 6 months. I don't think this is unfair, in fact I've somewhat lessened the costs from what I was thinking yesterday.
I ask you non-commenting slime to leave me your feedback, let me know your thoughts, and if you are against my idea, all I ask for is your name, address and phone number so I can contact you to find a nice convenient time for both of us, so that I may come and slash your tires.
